Fixed Term appointments for up to 3 years each to start as soon as possible

Research Assistant salary in the range: £28,770 to £31,880 per annum

Research Associate salary in the range: £32,750 – £41,540 per annum

The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities. It has consistently been awarded the highest research rating (5*) in Research Assessment Exercises (RAE), coming 2nd in the 2008 RAE, and was rated as “Excellent” in the previous national assessment of teaching quality.

The Discovery Sciences Group has vacancies for two Research Assistants / Associates to work alongside Professor Yike Guo and his team on the eTRIKS project (Delivering European Translation Information & Knowledge Management Services) funded by the EU IMI (Innovative Medicines Initiative).  The group has a successful track record of research at the interface between computing, statistics, mathematics and biology.

eTRIKS (www.etriks.org) is an ongoing project that is developing a knowledge management software infrastructure to manage clinical studies of new drug treatments and perform bioinformatics analysis in areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. The platform is extending and building on existing open source software including the award winning tranSMART (transmartfoundation.org) clinical study management platform.  This is one of the largest informatics projects in the world.

The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the development or implementation of integration, analysis and visualisation methods for high-throughput data, with a particular emphasis on data produced via next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, as well as consulting and collaborating with partner biomedical research projects on data analysis. You will be expected to fully collaborate with team members to develop and provide software; writing clean, well structured, documented code following good software engineering practices; reusing and developing code libraries to promote the long-term sustainability of the developed software platform; providing training/support to technical and non-technical end-users; contributing to the dissemination of work within the group and also externally at national and international conferences by presentation, publication and demonstration.

To apply you should have a track record of biomedical research with solid knowledge of bioinformatics. The ability to conduct and complete research projects, working knowledge of modern statistical programming languages (e.g R, MatLab) and programming languages (e.g. Java, Perl, Python); demonstrated working with SQL databases.

At Research Assistant level you will have a good first degree or Masters (or equivalent) in a related area.  At Research Associate level you will have a PhD (or equivalent) in bioinformatics, biology, computer science, or informatics or significant software development experience with an emphasis on large-scale scientific data management.
