Research Assistant salary in the range: £28,770 to £31,880 per annum

Research Associate salary in the range: £32,750 – £41,540 per annum

The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities. It has consistently been awarded the highest research rating (5*) in Research Assessment Exercises (RAE), coming 2nd in the 2008 RAE, and was rated as “Excellent” in the previous national assessment of teaching quality.

The Discovery Sciences Group headed by Professor Yike Guo is seeking an experienced, collaborative and enthusiastic Senior Software Engineer to join their translational research team. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a new and enthusiastic team and a wider diverse community of research scientists, pharmaceuticals, bioinformaticians and IT experts joining forces to build the eTRIKS platform; an EU IMI (Innovative Medicines Initiative) funded project to deliver an open, sustainable research informatics and analytics platform to serve data and knowledge management needs of IMI and other translational research projects. This is one of the largest projects in the field of biomedical informatics.

The key responsibilities of this position include; responsibility for technical delivery of the project as well as developing key components of the platform, reviewing creative concept work for technical feasibility and contributing to architecture and technology discussions within the development team.

To be considered for this role you will have substantial experience in software development, possess a thorough understanding of web application architecture and current web 2.0 trends and best practices, an in-depth knowledge of server side Java/J2EE technologies, working experience using web frameworks (Spring MVC, GRAILS, DJANGO…etc) and client side technologies (HTML, CSS, JQuery, Web Services REST/SOAP, AngularJS), experience integrating front-end code with server-side technology on a production website, a good knowledge of Linux, solid understanding of search technologies, including experience working with Lucene and Solr, a strong understanding of distributed software applications, including scalability, performance, and reliability aspects and a strong background in design patterns and OOD.

For a Research Assistant level post you will have a good first degree or Masters (or equivalent) in a related area.  For a Research Associate level post you will have a PhD (or equivalent) in computer science, software engineering, or informatics or significant software development experience with an emphasis on large-scale scientific data management.
